Appraisal Guard
Appraisal Guard was established as a resource and tool for underwriters and sales agents to confirm the language and valuation of new appraisals.

Thorough appraisals will include:

The type of item (engagement ring, earring, bracelet), the type of metal and its color (platinum, 18 karat yellow gold), trademark or manufacturer name, method of construction (die cast, custom made, hand made), size (mm) and weight (pennyweight or gram)

The number of stones and if there are diamonds then their 4 C's should be indicated (cut, color, clarity and Carat weight) and for colored gemstones hue, tone and saturation. If a grading system other then GIA or AGS is used then a conversion chart should be included. Type of setting (prong, bezel, etc. ), Measurements of the stone (mm) and any enhancements must be indicated (laser drilled, irradiated, fracture filled).

Some types of jewelry require additional information such as pearls, opals and wristwatches. Contact us for additional information.

Under current laws there is no license required to write a jewelry appraisal and even some jewelers with proper training intentionally write vague appraisals so that they are contacted when a loss takes place.  Additionally, inflated appraisal values are a common sales tactic.
